I have the same problem with my ATI FireGL 3600 card. No problem if I
use the xorg radeonhd driver.
But with the ATI catalyst driver, gdm and gnome don't use the full
screen space/resolution : it is centered, with a black border for unused
part of screen

look at bug 281486 .
I have applied the following workaround as described on the bug comments
(it works):
