Compiz actually manages the blacklist here. I think there is already a
bug report for blacklisting older ati cards, but just setting to compiz
for their review for now.

I just did a full update of my karmic installation on my Thinkpad T41.
Turning on compiz *still* causes screen corruption, with full system
lockup soon after. I also just tried booting from the karmic release
candidate live cd (off of USB), which still defaults to having compiz
turned on. Again, I
I tested the 9.10 (Karmic) Release Candidate as a Live CD on my ThinkPad
T42 (which was running Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems).
The desktop startup noise plays, and the panels appear with no icons.
The desktop background has not loaded. At this point the display
freezes, including the mouse pointer

Here are Xorg.0.log and dmesg after booting into karmic alpha6 off the
livecd (on a USB stick) and immediately disabling compiz. The system
hard locks within a minute if compiz is left enabled. After disabling
it, if I then go to re-enable it, the system hard locks almost
immediately.

I discovered that if I turn off compiz (set fancy effects to None)
within about 30 sec of booting up from the LiveCD, everything becomes
completely stable, and any screen corruption disappears. This means that
I can post results from Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg'. Hopefully those will be
relevant to the p
I also have a Thinkpad T41 with the same video specs: ATI Radeon
Mobility 9000 etc. I tried LiveCD, Karmic, Alpha 6, with same result as
everyone else reporting above. System lockup which requires power
off/power on. Keyboard is unresponsive. I posted my version of the
bug, in the wrong sect
By the way, my 14" LCD is 1400x1050. The extra resolution has caused
issues in the past, at least with compiz.

can't say I've noticed this problem in Ubuntu 9.04, but I just tried
booting from the 9.10 alpha5 karmic livecd (off a USB stick), and the
system always locks up within a minute or so of booting. I noticed a

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.
This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.
I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,

Do you have an AGP system? If so, does it help if you try some different
AGPMode values? (1,2,4,8)
Please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk and
report back if it helps.
Also, if you can, please check if you can reproduce this on Ubuntu
Karmic. LiveCD's of the alpha
