What's needed is a way to make this sort of adjustment without going
in and directly editing xorg.conf, such as making a selection at boot
time, as with some older live CDs.

DR AMD's solution worked for me, i had the exact same problem. Now I
have 1024x768 resolution, much better than 800x600
