I've just tried Bryce's PPA. Boot gets to the login screen, but all
attempts to log in with a Gnome session fails. I get the Star Trekian
transporter effect, then the screen flashes to black, and then I'm right
back at the login prompt. An xterm session does succeed. This is all I
have in my .x

This issue may affect me too. I just grabbed 64bit Karmic alpha 5 and
tried to boot from CD. I cannot get a working graphics desktop even in
safe mode. I see the splash screen and the little rising transporter
room effect, the cursor spins and then goes blank. Then the splash
screen comes back

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.
This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.
