anymore, I don't hve Karmic and prefer to stick with stable Jaunty until

What seems to be going on here is that the video is being sent to your
(phantom) VGA port instead of LVDS.
Are you able to correct it by doing this?
In Section Device add the line:
Option monitor-LVDS VGA
Then add the following new section:
Section Monitor
