When my laptop goes to suspend, the screen just switches off instead
(suspend has previously worked) of suspending, could this be the same
issue?

upgrade to karmic to check if that's help. At the beginning it was worst
but the last upgrade seems to improve the situation a lot. For now the
main problem is that the mouse is not working after hibernation. I need
to go to a terminal and rmmod psmouse ; modprobe psmouse and everything
