This is not an issue for me anymore. I'm using kubuntu natty and I tried
with recent nvidia and nouveau drivers, so the problem is gone.

It seems I am the only one with kdm restart problems with nvidia driver
version 185.18.36 in jaunty. let's wait for karmic or nvidia driver 190
to see if that fixes the problem...

Actually, I had to downgrade to nvidia 180 because nvidia 185.18.31 had a bug
in my laptop and X didn't start at all. However, nvidia had another bug for
this driver and X crashed for some applications like smplayer, kaffeine,
kdevelop... whenever, for instance I opened the open file window,

It seems that it's related specifically to the nvidia driver since after
downgrading from nvidia 185 to nvidia 180 all this came back to work
normally
