I have just booted a Karmic Koala 9.10 disk (with the Aug 1 kernel
build) on this system and eventually (it's only a 400 mHz system) it
comes up fine in 1024x768 resolution. The Display Preferences dialog
shows a number of possible lower resolution settings. I tried several

Since you have an AGP card, one thing to try out is if one of the
alternate AGPModes solves the issue. The symptoms you describe match up

In my case, the upgrade to 8.04 after the installation of 7.10 went
well. The display driver selected in xorg.conf is 'vesa'.
