Since you have an AGP card, one thing to try out is if one of the
alternate AGPModes solves the issue. The symptoms you describe match up

I have just installed Ubuntu 7.10 on this system. On starting the
installer, I specified the screen resolution as 1024x768x24. The
installation went well, though this system is slow by today's
