I can confirm that - since I installed lucid's kernel (linux-
image-2.6.32-13-386) the screen artifacts disappeared (& KMS is enabled
by default). Besides, the performance of my ATI card is really amazing
now... It's like I got a new notebook :) Thanks!!

As I am also affected by this bug with that same ATI Radeon 9600

following the recommendations on the other defect on freedesktop I have
force the card into the PCI mode using the radeon driver option
radeon.agpmode=-1 in karmic.
After that I'm running with no problems for one week.
Do we really need an AGP Quirk ?

ok removed the options from Xorg.conf. It does not matter for the
AccelMethod as I suspect the PPA ati driver is using EXA anyway. Now the
corruption is less likely, but it is different one, mostly text font
tearing.
