A gnome-session --debug log. I made this by this:
- log in using the xterm session
- this opened a single xterm window
- gnome-session --debug 21 | tee gnome-session-debug.log
- this killed X again

Suggested by seb128: Running compiz from the xterm instead of gnome-
session-debug (right after logging in via the xterm session as tomjon)
also kills X.
This would confirm to me that it's an X bug.

that made the problem go away. this is obviously not a fix, but it's a
sufficient workaround for me, since I need this
