Another description and Title update.

Problem is a font size. Title updated.
Problem appears in GDM too and in all 8.04-9.10 releases.

The problem appears to be yet another huge font size problem.
Problem appears in GDM too and in all 8.04-9.10 releases.
Gnome itself escapes the problem.
KDE and GDM : Either edges (borders) of the characters appear in windows and
boxes, or the latters adapt their sizes to the font, causing white screens in
which you do mad scrolling of lines taking 1/4 of screen heigth or so.

I read though a number of similar bug reports without finding a close match.
This solved the GDM case, however:
# /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -br -audit 0 -dpi 96

To my understanding, these are correct for Gnome in our installed 9.04:
(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 338 x 211
$ xdpyinfo | grep dots
  resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
System > Preferences > Appearance > Fonts > Details... is 96 dpi already.

But this seems incorrect in the attached, KDE Xorg.0.log:
(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 289 x 21

Is the X server not the same for Gnome and KDE???

As the bugs I read refrain from being a duplicate of one another, I did the
same.
Especially making it a duplicate of Bug #151311 !!!

What is the official workaround for this class of problems?

** Description changed:

Using 09.10 alpha 6 LiveCD on a Medion MD 97900.
Display makes 2 entries in lspci :
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 03)
- Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated
Graphics
+ Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics

After Kubuntu started to initialize normally, the desktop shows two otherwise
blank windows and a taskbar "overlayed" with fragments of extra huge
characters. If some clicking is made to start something, the desktop changes
to thin stripes. The system finally dies, not responding to any click.
Ctrl-Alt-F2 and I extracted the attached logs.

Strangely enough, there seems to be no problem with Ubuntu (Gnome)
  LiveCD.

  Update :
Please note that this laptop isn't mine and that I'll be away on october 3rd
for 15 days.

When Kubuntu-desktop is installed on top of (G)Ubuntu, the said problem
occurs not only while a KDE session runs but as soon as the Display Manager
starts (which the kid blindly worked through anyway).
This is probably because KDE stomps on Gnome instead of gently sitting next.

+ Update #2:
+
+ Problem is a font size. Title updated.
+ Problem appears in GDM too and in all 8.04-9.10 releases.
+
  Side story :
As there is an apparently 2 years-old problem with iwl3945 not enabling the
WiFi controller when the button is pressed, preventing any use of the WiFi, and
not counting the issues in more entries for iwl3945 ...

... the kid I'm striving to help, or try to, wants to use Windows, or Suse if
the WiFi's fixed.
  Update:
This WiFi problem was worked around with a BIOS WiFi always-on setting, but
that's obviously not the correct solution and someone should care about getting
that button problem fixed.
I'm afraid you made at least one more KDE deserter )-: :-)

** Summary changed:

- [i945GM] display garbled only with Kubuntu Karmic
+ [i945GM] Huge font size in KDE and GDM. Makes KDE unusable 8.04-9.10.
