[RV100/RV200] (Needs KMS) Background and
KMS on Lucid has the same low performance than on Karmic, regarding graphic
effects like Compiz. To have better results (more than double, if we take
compiz benchmark as reference) I have to disable KMS by starting the system
with the option nomedeset.
Then I followed the same workaround I
Marking this as fixed in Lucid, as we've got KMS enabled by default and
that fixes the initially reported bug. We should follow up your display
artefacts and the lack of Xv overlay on separate bugs.

The reason for the fullscreen video performance hit seems to be no XV
overlay support w/ KMS turned on. Furthermore, as of xserver-xorg-video-
ati 6.13.0-1ubuntu2, XV has been explicitly and completely disabled on
my machine (which I believe to be a mistake, bug #562537).
Temporary workaround
Doesn't seem to be a compiz issue here (at least not any more).

update after upgrading to lucid:
KMS is now getting turned on automatically (I can see it in my dmesg
output), and so the bug is fixed from the standpoint that I no longer
get a black background and no full screen apps. I do still get
artifacts, but so far (a little less than a day) no freezes,
