I can confirm this on my system too. Removing compiz seems to solve the
problem running the latest and most up to date Ubuntu 10.04.

me that the problem might be the ATI's driver. The exacly words were "fglrx is
buggy with respect to having compositing and xvideo at the same time".

Fine, here are some results. It seems the issue is related to XVideo
extension and Compiz.

- Totem[1] (using "ximagesink") -> no issue
- Totem (using "xvimagesink" or "autovideosink") -> issue

video player. Like VLC or Mplayer, or anyone that you like. Because this will
indicate us if the problem is from the codecs or the video player (with compiz

Yes, it still persists with 9.10 updated yesterday to latest available.
An additional (maybe unuseful) note: the no-video occurs on AVi files on
first minimizing action (i.e. minimize -> restore -> black video),
instead on second action with OGV files (i.e. minimize -> restore ->
video -> minimize
