I have autodetection back by rolling back.
I modified my /etc/apt/preferences file to specify the priorities for
Mint and Ubuntu repositories as greater than 1000...

The latest version did not fix the problem. Still awaiting a stable
xserver-xorg-video-intel. I assume this is the component at fault.
