Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
Karmic no longer fails back to a known good fail safe graphics configuration if x crashes. Instead X is continually being restarted upon failure. This is a regression and is most likely related to how xsplash is being used. To recreate this bug start the computer with a broken xorg.conf configuration. In my case i somehow no longer had the kernel part of the nvidia driver installed. X would then start and report that the kernel module could no longer be found, It would then restart as X has crashed.
