I have encountered this same problem after recently upgrading to Ubuntu
9.10 from 9.04 on an old Dell 2350 which has the same Intel 82845G
graphics chipset. I have reloaded 9.04 and the system is then stable.

I was seeing this lockup on my 9.10 system (an old Compaq Evo D510
computer). I followed the suggestion of Geir Ove Myhr to turn off KMS
and the system has now been up for over 10 days without any issues.
