I created a xorg.conf file in my /etc/X11/ directory.
Then I copied and pasted the xorg.conf text from ajgreeney's comment
into my new xorg.conf file, and saved my xorg.conf file.
Now desktop effects seem to work fine in both GNOME and KDE, and I don't get a
black background when desktop

Same problem with ATI radeon 9000 on notebook ASUS L5830C. I solved this
problem with ajgreeny suggestion changing to 16 bit colour; here are principal
line of my xorg.conf:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"

Simply disabling desktop effects has "solved" my problems (I get full
desktop functionality but no effects). Also, editing xorg.conf to force
XAA instead of EXA mo
Same problem here with ati 9200SE card. Worked very well in ubuntu
9.04. I have changed to 16 bit colour to get wallpaper background to
show while using compiz, by using a manual edit to xorg.conf. The

What Michel Boisset said also happens on my PC.
My default resolution is 1280 x 1024.
I changed my resolution to 1024 x 768 and then enabled desktop effects.
The black desktop problem didn't happen.
Then, without disabling desktop effects, I changed my resolution to 1280
x 1024.

I noticed that this problem occurs when the screen is set to 1280 x 1024
on my pc. When I set it to 1024 x 768 the desktop background appears
correctly.
