@john_s actually when compositing is supported, the user experience is a
lot better with compositing turned on.
The issue with thin clients is that some drivers seem to make X crash,
for others, the same magic as for desktop computers get executed to
determine if whether or not the hardware is cap
Gadi's amended file worked for me as well. FWIW thin clients are NOT the
place to run resource intensive eye-candy!

As can be seen in the .xsession-errors, the compiz wrapper scripts
correctly bails out (there is no 3D support on these cards) and falls
back to running metacity instead of compiz.

Ok so compiz should fail to run anyway since you are using Software
Rasterizer so the real problem is the ati driver killing the X server.
See if running `LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 glxinfo` kills it consistently.
