Same issue. Dell GX 270, Intel P4, 82865G Intel Graphics Controller.
Available modes are 800x600 and 640x480.
$ cat Xorg.0.log
...
(II) LoadModule: i810
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module i810
(II) UnloadModule: i810
(EE) Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0)
$ sudo apt-get
Again, it is just a warning that can be ignored.

I had the same problem as Luis Belmar-Letelier (fresh install, 800x600
resolution). The following worked for me:
1.) Create /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the driver intel
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
driver intel
EndSection
2.) Tell xrandr about further modes to
4 matches
