On Ubuntu 9.04 LVDS output worked quite fine, but 9.10 does not mention
the LVDS output at all. It's not a notebook but a industrial embedded
motherboard.

Using the nomodeset option enables the LVDS output and makes it appear
in xrandr.
As usually people who connect LVDS-displays which do not use EDID or the
like should know what they are doing, a documented switch might suffice
for this case.

Could you also check if the problem is still present if you disable KMS
('Esc' at boot to show the Grub boot menu, 'e' to edit the command
behind the menu entry and then add the parameter nomodeset after
quiet sync). We would like /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of
`xrandr --verbose` for that
