As far as I can see this is a proposal to change how the upgrade system
works, when using unofficial ubuntu packages. I think it is better if
you launch that idea on Brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/). It
may be a good idea, but maybe there are undesirable aspect that you
haven't thought ab

Bump. This issue caused suspend to fail on my Thinkpad T61 and desktop
effects wouldn't work either. I upgraded the xserver-xorg-video-intel
package and both problems went away. Took me a long time to diagnose
this.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
