A workaround that works for me is to do a SysReq R,E That takes me to the console, a couple of Alt-right keypresses will get me to a console login. I then log in and run "sudo service gdm start". Once I'm logged back into my desktop, I can run "sudo NetworkManager". This at least removes the need
