This problems appears to be caused byFirefox and a flash editor (Potlatch) because exactly the same conditions appear on an XP machine (sorry) using the same software. Any Ubuntu problems are a side effect of the software instability. -- Mouse is going haywire.

Update on this. I'm not sure if it resolves the issue yet, but when using Checkbox i noted that the screens were set to outside the monitor operational limits - although shown as auto in Nvidia utility. Checkbox apprently changes the resolution settings, which must be selected back to those
