Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
I allowed the most recent high priority updates to install yesterday, on an otherwise up to date installation of Ubuntu Karmic. I didn't take careful notes on what packages were being updated, but I do recall mention of both the kernel (to 2.6.31-16 generic) and gdm. After the updater completed, it wanted a reboot. After the reboot, my GNOME sessions no longer start. Both the normal GNOME session and the Failsafe GNOME session cause the screen to go black, pause a second or so, then relaunch the login screen. The xterm session does work, and from there I can see that gnome-settings-daemon had an assertion failure. Searching for similar bugs has not been particularly successful, although I did find Bug #452184 quoted a similar assertion failure from an earlier version of the gnome-settings-daemon. I'm guessing that this assertion failure is causing a cascade of errors that result in the whole session exiting, which gdm handles "gracefully" be putting the login screen back up. The frustration level is pretty high, as the machine is effectively not useful in this condition. >From the GRUB menu, I have tried the available kernels (2.6.31-16, -15, and -14). Of those, I got a successful login and session once on 2.6.31-14-generic, but haven't been able to repeat this since.
