This bug report is from running ubuntu-bug xorg when lucid 2.6.32-7 did
manage to boot to desktop.
I'll attach apport from the more frequent boot which gets a black
screen. I got the black screen apport from Ctrl-Alt-F1 which gets

Lucid dead black screen again today! On one or another of my test pc's
with intel and ati video graphics I get black screen for weeks on
Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, now Lucid.
Only way I got running today was to boot in recovery and manually key
in:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Bug also appears with kernel 2-6-32-9, so I'm continuing investigation
there under bug #499102. In the latter bug, xorg freezes shortly after
boot example when entering a comment onto launchpad.

2.6.32-9 kernel booted to black screen for several days, see bug
#499102. With yesterday's updates (using recovery mode fix broken
packages) the kernel is booting O.K. this morning.
As of today working O.K. Will watch out for new updates
