the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this
(II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (insufficient memory
for mode)
try setting the DefaultDepth to 16.
recovery mode uses the vesa driver, and likely a 16bit color depth.

Oddly if i log in with the recovery mode the 1024 X 768 is working.

Had the same problem with a toshiba satellite pro 4600 and lucid. I only had to
generate a fresh xorg.conf with :
sudo X -configure
sudo mv ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Edit this file to modify the monitor section :
Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
Option DPMS true
HorizSync
