Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
After the upgrade to Karmic from Jaunty, my Thinkpad Z60m can no longer use the external monitor connected via VGA. When I plug in the monitor and "Detect Monitors", the system detect 3 instead of 2. The laptop LVDS display is always there, but when I connect the VGA monitor, xrandr (and Display Preferences) detect the VGA monitor and a third display (DVI-0). It didn't do this in Jaunty. For some reason this prevents me from using the correct resolution on the external VGA display (1680x1050, the same as the laptop LVDS). xrandr output with nothing connected: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1680 VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) LVDS connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm 1680x1050 60.1*+ 50.1 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 59.9 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 59.9 1280x854 59.9 1280x800 59.8 1280x720 59.9 1152x768 59.8 1024x768 59.9 800x600 59.9 640x480 59.4 S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) xrandr with the external display attached via VGA: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1680 VGA-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1360x768 59.8 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9 DVI-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1360x768 59.8 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 640x480 59.9 LVDS connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm 1680x1050 60.1*+ 50.1 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 59.9 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 59.9 1280x854 59.9 1280x800 59.8 1280x720 59.9 1152x768 59.8 1024x768 59.9 800x600 59.9 640x480 59.4 S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) As you can see, it incorrectly detects a DVI-0 zero screen, and uses the same modes (max of 1360x768) for that and the VGA-0 display which should have 1680x1050 available. I've tried using xrandr to only enable the VGA display, but have had no success. I've tried the following in xorg.conf without success: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Driver "radeon" Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT" EndSection Is there a known work around to this? Or is there a bug in the radeon driver which is mis-detected a phantom display?
