You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: upstart
I installed Lucid alpha-1 and have been updating frequently through today. As of sometime yesterday (15 Jan 2010) it usually crashes during the boot process - usually as gdm is starting, showing a rotating mouse pointer. The pointer stops rotating and the system seems to totally freeze, with no disk activity. If I select the 2.6.32-9-generic kernel instead, the system will boot all the way, but then I see the X screen problem described in Bug #495553. (Note that the tty display problem described in that bug still exists). If I select booting into recovery mode, and log in as root, I can start gdm (That is how I got this system running just now). Note also that I see that other daemons, such as ssh and apache2 have not started either - I have to start them manually. Also, the virtual screen used for text display in recovery mode is too big, so that lines I enter are off the screen, so I have to "fly blind" - enter commands and password without seeing what I type.
