I'm using a Samsung N130 with following graphic chipset >lspci 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Try to connect a second monitor/device, the system totally freeze, can't do any thing. It is reproducable: Connecting the second device, open an terminal and run xrandr >xrandt[enter] The system will imidiatly be freeze. What you can see, is that both devices are black and the mouse cursor going to second device while hourglass remain in device one. When I restart the system, and the second device is connected while booting the system, the second device run in clone mode and the highest resolution is 640x480.
