Apologies, I hadn't realised that support for running with nomodeset had
been intentionally yanked. Of course, I had my reasons for using it
(e.g. making suspend to disk work properly) but I guess I can close this
invalid in the name of "progress" :-/

the bug status to invalid?

OK, it turns out to be the use of the nomodeset kernel parameter which
triggers the problem

This issue was happening every time yesterday, but today X always starts
up correctly... really can't imagine what might have changed to
influence this.
