Did you remove the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or at least removed the lines pointing to NVidia proprietary drivers?
Reinstalling nvidia-current should not work unless you run the command:
nvidia-xconfig
That command will edit the xorg.conf file.

Yes, I've edited the Driver line manually, from nvidia to nouveau.
But during this blackout I'm reporting here, I've been using Driver nv, and
it should not matter really - or does X start before any cryptsetup passphrase
dialog already?!
