The problem appears to be solved in kubuntu/maverick. Nouveau is working
properly in that distribution. I have not tried with any others.

This is getting confusing. I removed the xorg.conf, and rebooted without
the 'nomodeset' option. Nouveau came up properly, in 1680x1050
resolution. I do not know why it is now working; there have been a few
updates. When I reinstalled the xorg.conf, and un-commented the
monitor stuff, nouveau
For some reson, apport-collect is crashing. Will try later.

Argh. The apport bug hooks were broken for a while, and did not attach
the necessary information to this bug.
Could you please move your xorg.conf out of the way, reboot without
nomodeset, and run
apport-collect 537745
again? Thanks!

Workaround found:
Comment out the Monitor section in xorg.conf, and the Monitor entry in the
Screen section.
Add MetaModes and Modes lines in the screen section of xorg.conf, like this:
