This problem still exists in Lucid Beta 2. I replicated this exactly on
my Acer Aspire Revo R3600 - X crashes and causes a total system hang. I
can boot from the Lucid live cd but only by using the "nomodeset
xforcevesa" options...
Chewit: can you advise the workaround you used to get Lucid bootin

As I said, you should be able to use “nomodeset xforcevesa” to use the
vesa driver, which should work. Or, a
video=VGA-1:800x600, dont think thats right, didn't change anything for
me.
Is there no way to set the livecd to use nv drivers

You can add “nomodeset xforcevesa” to the boot line of the LiveCD which
will use VESA driver as a fallback; this should work.
Sorry. I didn't notice that you were booting without your only display
plugged in. I'm somewhat surprised that other drivers work without any
monitor plugged in; generall
Chris, how the hell do i access System→Preferences→Monitors when I cant
get a GUI up.
Also, monitors should work when you plug them in! Ubuntu 7.10,
8.04,8.10, 9.04, 9.10 using intel, ati and nv drivers allowed me to
unplug the monitor and plug it back in. Even in Windows!
Question, how do I tell
And if you enable the monitor in System→Preferences→Monitors?
Automatically enabling monitors that get plugged in is not necessarily
expected to work.

Just tried the Beta 2 iso. When I plugged in the monitor this time, Xorg
didn't crash. However, my monitor displayed a message saying that there
was no input.

We have all of the patches identified in the Lucid kernel already -
these were all in 2.6.33, and Lucid kernels from 2.6.32-16 onwards have
the drm component of 2.6.33.
If those patches fix this problem, then the Beta 1 livecd certainly has
them. Could you please retest?

Ubuntu Lucid is less than a month away from release, there is still a
bug in Lucid which I have provided the solution to, but no one has
bothered to do anything about it!

So I can use Ubuntu from a live CD, I have to unplug my monitor during

This patch is also required for ION:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/commit/?id=76befb8c30cebe2af83fa346bdaf75b430893511
Also, the 3 previous patches might be useful, they're for NV50 in
general.
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/commit/?id=531e77139f26e8da32ee694b9ee5e6
I have spoken to people in the nouveau irc channel and they believe a
patch needs to be applied to the kernel drm.
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/commit/?id=6c42966768b0254f465a8f451333795283f53d22
This might solve the problem.
