Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

I have a notebook that uses video chipset SIS 671, and the video card works
only at 800x600 resolution, there are several drivers on the Internet that
enable the 1280x800 resolution, but as I think the philosophy of Ubuntu is to
be easy, I suggest that you indicate these drivers after installing Ubuntu or
incorporate the actual Ubuntu. For years and years that people report this bug
and nothing happens. We know that Ubuntu is free and we can not complain.
There are other Linux distributions that support this chipset as Mandriva and
Brazilian Satux. If they support this chipset can also support Ubuntu.
Satux have 3d acceleration chip that, because they contacted the SIS, Canonical
also could do that.
