I installed a new system from scratch using the Beta 2 64 bit disk. I
ran into the same problem detailed above. However, I removed the
drivers (2 of them) then re-installed using the
Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects and selecting normal. This
initiated the search for drivers. I followed

Now when I log in I have to manually start metacity at a command prompt.

I booted the laptop, then CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a vconsole. Then I
executed 'stop gdm'. Then I executed:
lsmod | fgrep nvidia
The result was: nvidia 10799466 30
However, executing
modprobe -r nvidia
results in:
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
