When the "Routine Disk Check" reached near completion, the screen ceased
to display anything and appears to have frozen. However, I ssh'ed into
my computer with the frozen display and was able to function normally,

In short, I haven't had a problem with this again.
I don't specifically recall having this problem with 10.04, but it's possible

Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can
you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu?
