I was thinking it's perhaps the fact that the mother board (4coredual-vsta) add
agp and pcie, as kms seems to seek the agp during initialization it mays
somehow interact with the performance.
Switching to ums / Disabling kms works alsa.

@Bryce I think you should reopen this bug since this is a regression
from karmic and a friend of mine has the same problem with his card.
Maybe I could help you by providing necessary information about this bug
that causes very slow performances in ubuntu and people with this card
_SHOULD_ disable
Just wanted to add that using software rendering via the vesa driver
gives me good enough performance. Now I can use 3D applications again!
Disable KMS and switch your xorg.conf to vesa!
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for information.

Unfortunately there seems to be no documentation of how the proper way
of reporting should look like for performance troubles.
Please give some hints, as currently no 3D application can be run
without making the OS unusable while an 3D application is running.

There is a proper way to report performance issues against Ubuntu but
I'm afraid you're not doing it.
As a general rule, we do not do performance optimization work in Ubuntu,
and thus do not accept generic "performance is bad" reports without some
solid analysis and details. In general, when peop

I just used the kubuntu 10.04 b2 live cd and there are no 3D

I just tried the LiveCD for Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and have no problems
regarding any 3D acceleration including the visual effects set to
"normal".
glxgears gives me 23'000 frames per 5 seconds in 9.10.
glxgears gives me 70 frames per average 6 seconds in 10.04.
