Same problem on my Ubuntu 10.04 pc.
Both in work (32bit) and home (64bit).
After a short period when I try to logout the screen shows only the background
picture and my mouse moves.
No other option from keyboard available.
The only option available is reset.

I see totally the same behavior with Ubuntu Lucid (Gnome). It works with
default driver but it doesn't work with nvidia 96.

On the new installation the error isn't present.
I installed the last Nvidia-driver and everything looks fine so far.

as i have written i have found this bug with a fresh installation of Kubuntu
10.04 Lucid Lynx.
Not an earlier version.
There where several problems that seems not to be solved.
So some days ago i dropped all my configuration work and made a new fresh
installation.

Upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (32bits).
The same problem here, after logging out, the black screen appears and
the keyboard doesn't respond. I was rebooting with
Alt+PrintScreen+R+S+E+I+U+B.
I'm using the radeon driver (the free one).
