ATI Radeon HD4550 with fglrx uses high RAM,
I tasted with newer version fglrx-installer (2:8.801-0ubuntu1~xup~lucid)
from here https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates and
ram is ok! After several hours of use no more than 500-600MB RAM
