Title:
/etc/init.d/x11-common's chmod 1777 fails to clear setuid and set
I can confirm that my system was missing "root:x:0:" from /etc/group,
and adding it fixed this bug on my Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64 system.

Paul, I've looked at 8.04 and 10.04 systems and /etc/group already had
"root:x:0:" as the first line. So your system seems odd in that it
didn't have this line. Could it have been removed accidentally at some
point?

I had this problem and resolved the issue by editing /etc/group to

What was happening was that the line
chown root:root $SOCKET_DIR
which is responsible for the ownership of /tmp/.X11-unix in
/etc/init.d/x11-common was calling the root group, which is not created
