I have exactly the same problem. I try to open a pptx file X crashes.
In the file Xorg.0.log.old you can find:

yes, but i'd rather not just post it publicly. I did try removing
slides until it got small, yet still caused the crash. I got it down to
~6 slides, but it's a little painful trying to figure out which slide(s)
cause the crash. Can i email it to you (and hope you won't post it :))?

anything I've tried so far.
