Title:
ati catalyst proprietary display driver
i jumped the gun too soon i'm afraid. it WORKS for a SINGLE desktop, but
NOT when i connect my laptop to an external monitor and try to split the
desktop between the two (multidesktop). the reason is probably the newer
kernel and that the hotfix from AMD doesnt work on 10.10 yet, or am i
wrong?
The hotfix driver doesn't support Ubuntu 10.10 yet. The 8.780 driver
included in Ubuntu 10.10 does and it has the same workaround as the
hotfix driver. Use the fglrx that comes with Ubuntu 10.10. This is the
only driver that supports Ubuntu 10.10 until Catalyst 10.10 is release
on amd.com.

ive tried the fglrx driver and it doesnt work. i get the same error when i
try to start the control center, that the ati driver isnt installed.

If you didn't install the driver using jockey (the HW manager) you need
to run aticonfig --initial and reboot to activate the driver.

i ran jockey-gtk and there were no drivers.
i installed fglrx, which also installed fglrx-amdcccle.
i ran jockey-gtk again and it now shows up in the list, but says this
driver is activated, but not currently in use. the only option in the
jockey window is the Remove button, no Put it to use
