Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a Thinkpad X201 with Ubuntu 10.10. I already installed all
firmware upgrades available from Lenovo. This is a first time install of
Ubuntu on this system. I worked with Ubuntu for two days and everything
was fine (although 2 days is not really a long time to tell). I then
connected a Samsung 24" display via VGA, which I use as primary display,
and every since X.org keeps freezing once in a while under high load:

- The display does not update any more
- The mouse cursor has vanished
- No reaction to keyboard or mouse
- I can ssh into the system and need to kill -9 (without -9 won't help) the "X"
process
- Xorg.log shows "EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite
loop" and a stack trace."

I see a lot of freezes when using Crossover Office, especially during
the installation of Windows applications. It seems that Crossover
generates heavy X11 traffic during creation of bottles and installation
of software. However the bug is not limited to Crossover, I got a freeze
today where no Crossover application was active at all, but I had a lot
of windows open (though no video or 3D stuff - just OpenOffice, Firefox,
other Internet applications, a few shells).

I have tried the Intel driver that came with Ubuntu, and I have also
tried the 2.13git driver from Stefan Glasenhardt. The latter seemed to
ease the problem, but today I got a freeze even with this driver.

I am attaching a couple of logfiles. Unfortunately, "i915_error_state"
keeps reporting "no error state collected".

I am running the kernel that came with Ubuntu. I tried the kernels from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline, but those kernels render
my system unusuable: a) VirtualBox does not work, and b) my external
monitor is very frequently blanked for about a second, it seems to me
that the blanking happens each time Xrandr rescans the configuration, or
something like this. I worked with these kernels for about two hours,
but the bug did not occur during this time windows. I then had to revert
to normal.

If that would be of any help, I could leave the system frozen when the
issue happens next time and provide ssh access to it.
