Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On a HP 8440p, I use the external monitor through the Display Port (and adapter 
to DVI). The monitor will not work unless I switch it on and immediately plug 
it in just after I power on the laptop (basically, I have to switch it on and 
connect it when I see the bios welcome screen).
Once the monitor works, I can reboot and it will still work. If I switch off, I 
have to redo the same procedure.
Output through VGA works instead normally.
