Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
I tried booting the Natty 11.04 beta-1 live cd (32-bit) on a compaq presario with an nVidia chipset. The system took a long time to boot, possibly because of fairly low RAM and possibly because the hard disk is currently only formatted with a FreeBSD partition so that no swap space is available. However, the bug I'm reporting is that once the system logs in to a Gnome screen, the screen blanks for a second or so every few seconds. Looking at Xorg.0.log (in attached bug.tgz file) it looks like noveau and vesa drivers are loaded, along with various other drivers including frame buffer drivers. I previously had Fedora 14 installed, which displayed the same problem with the default nvidia driver, but worked ok at the Samsung SyncMaster 570S panel's max 1024x768 resolution using a vesa driver. Likewise on FreeBSD a vesa driver works better than the nv driver (which has another resolution problem). ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu6 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-7.39-generic 2.6.38 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-7-generic i686 Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, decor, mousepoll, vpswitch, regex, animation, snap, expo, move, compiztoolbox, place, grid, imgpng, gnomecompat, wall, ezoom, workarounds, staticswitcher, resize, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, scale, session, unityshell] CompositorRunning: None DRM.card0.DVI.D.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: Off modes: edid-base64: DRM.card0.VGA.1: status: connected enabled: enabled dpms: On modes: 1024x768 800x600 800x600 848x480 640x480 edid-base64: Date: Fri Apr 1 08:02:46 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: ubuntu GdmLog1: GdmLog2: GraphicsCard: nVidia Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150 LE] [10de:0241] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:2a3e] LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Beta i386 (20110330) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp.
