Turns out that removing "Pointing devices" solved the problem and re-
installing it caused the problem again so re-assigning to gpointing-
device-settings

Hmm, I'm not familiar with the dialog you're referring to. How did you
get to it? I checked the Mouse dialog but there is no "Disable
touchpad" checkbox option.
Does this happen every time you log in, or did it occur just the one
time?
You mentioned having bluetooth enabled. Does it not occur
It happens every time I log in. The "Pointing devices" application
(gpointing-device-settings 1.5.1-4) is something I installed from the
software centre as it enables management of multiple devices - the
default 'Mouse' application only manages the default. This happens on
every log in, regardles
