I have a Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu on it, and it will lock up at a

Install and run the xdiagnose utility. Use it to disable the vesafb
driver. Reboot, and see if that makes the freezes and error dialog
popups stop.
Fwiw, generally gpu lockups won't cause your ssh server to stop, that
sounds more like a kernel bug. Check your kernel log files
