I have been experiencing this as well. For me, it was sometimes random,
but it always occurred when I loaded up Calibre and tried to click on an
ebook.
Taking nsanz.cl's advice, I disabled some effects.
Same story.
Details:
Ubuntu 11.04 i386
nVidia graphics card (crash occurs with both nvidia and nouveau drivers)
Ubuntu Classic session
I use following sequence to reproduce:
Open Firefox, guake, deadbeef, Code::Blocks, gnome-terminal.
Build a big project in codeblocks.
Switch to terminal and run
Even simpler sequence to reproduce:
Log in to Recovery console session.
cd to directory with git branch
Run git citool

Crashes for me too, on both my Sony Vaio laptop (with an ATI card) and
ad my home computer (with nvidia card). Both using the ATI/nvidia
drivers, and both running Xubuntu with no special effects or
compositioning enabled.

I just deactivate some compiz effects and the problem appears to
disapear.
compiz efects disables:
-Enchanced Zoom Desktop
-Animations
-Grid
-Snapping Windows

I'm also having random X crashes since update to 11.04.
System is a dell laptop with intel mobile 4 graphic card running e16 (no
gnome).
