I've still got the same issue (Oneiric). I'm using XDM and EvilWM.
As a work around, what I do is:
- Alt+Ctrl+F1
- login
- /etc/init.d/xdm restart
- login via XDM
- kill the F1 console

i am the dude of which paul talked and i solved the problem by removed
ecryptfs of my $HOME. i was running natty before on an 'older' machine
and didnt had ecryptfs on that machine neither, so that might be a good
indicator of where the problemm is...
